Surgical Pathology

The Department of Pathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University offers a one year fellowship in Surgical Pathology. The department accessions approximately 15,000 cases annually comprising a wide spectrum of interesting cases covering general surgical pathology and most subspecialties including bone, breast, GI, pulmonary, and soft tissue. Both neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases are well-represented, and there is also a very busy pulmonary pathology outside consultation service.

Fellows spend the first three months on the general surgical pathology service where they cut in and sign out biopsy and routine cases as well as frozen sections under the direct supervision of an attending pathologist. In subsequent months they assume a supervisory role in the gross room and frozen section suite where they oversee residents and medical students. During this time they also are responsible for signing out referral cases and surgical neuropathology cases with the attending, organizing weekly surgical pathology unknown slide conferences, and presenting the monthly fellow journal club.

Three months elective time is provided for concentration on a subspecialty area or a research project. The fellowship provides an opportunity for individuals to strengthen their knowledge of general surgical pathology as well as subspecialty areas in a medium sized department where there is close interaction with the attending staff and emphasis on individual teaching. The aim is to fully prepare the fellow for independent practice, either in a private or an academic setting.
